Is Caviar Still Trending in 2026? Why McDonald’s McNugget Caviar Drop Sparked a Viral Debate

That question has been popping up everywhere this week, thanks to McDonald’s surprising McNugget Caviar collaboration, a limited-edition giveaway dropping online on February 10, just ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Some food commentators are skeptical about all of the buzz currently around caviar. In a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution article, four-time James Beard Award winner and Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern called the concept “so 2022,” and quipped that a McNugget topped with a multivitamin “would be a better way to say ‘I love you.’”

Others see the moment differently, as a sign that luxury ingredients like caviar are becoming more playful, accessible, and culturally viral than ever before.

At Eventful ATL, we’ve watched this shift firsthand through the hundreds of guests who attend our caviar-tasting workshops in Atlanta. Many come in skeptical, unfamiliar, or straight-up intimidated, and leave surprised, curious, and excited. That or they leave realizing that the taste of caviar is not for them! Either way, they tried it and that is all that matters.

So we asked a simple question: who actually likes caviar, and why? What we found wasn’t about gender or age; it was about mindset.

First Encounters With Caviar

For many people, caviar’s reputation comes before their first bite. “I always thought the idea of fish eggs would be gross,” explained Morgan Decker of New York, NY.

"Growing up, I found myself gaining a personal interest in caviar. I would research all about it, and I never saw any imagery of people who looked like me indulging in it. It was always pictures of luxury experiences, that didn't align with the place I was in during that time of my life. I was in college, and I just wanted to enjoy it as a snack because it was something that tasted good to me. Now, as an adult, it is one my favorite snacks to pair with something as simple of a truffle potato chip and a glass of sparkling wine or champagne. You will find me on the couch eating caviar on a paper plate next to my glass of wine, because it does not only have to be exclusive to a luxurious setting," said Morgan Prime, Eventful ATL's caviar-tasting workshop instructor.

“The first time I tried caviar was on National Caviar Day with Eventful ATL. I tried a variety of different casual pairings including the McDonalds McNugget and Sour Cream & Onion Pringles, and I remember thinking that it was fairly salty and the texture was interesting. Learning about it first made it more approachable, and I ended up really enjoying the experience,” shared Cheyenne Cooper of Atlanta, GA.

Many guests told us they expected caviar to feel intimidating, overly salty, or “not for them.” What surprised them most wasn’t the flavor, it was how approachable it felt once the rules were stripped away. If it wasn’t for social media shining a light on caviar as more than just a fancy service at a restaurant, it is very possible that there would still be so many people who had never tried the delicacy. In fact, Eventful ATL has been one of the only options in Atlanta that allows guests to try different types of caviar in a casual setting paired with light education and no judgement. Pair that with a price-tag under $100, and it has given so many people the opportunity to play around with caviar without committing to a $300+ caviar service where even then you likely don’t know much about what is on your table.

Is Caviar a "Luxury Food" or a "Fun Food"?

Traditionally, caviar has been positioned as a luxury signal, something reserved for fine dining, white tablecloths, and special occasions. However, what most people don’t know is that there have been times in history when there was so much caviar supply that it was often served at bars as a snack like peanuts. Regardless, there are many caviar brands that fight to push the narrative that it is only a luxury option, which can easily turn people who might not feel welcome into such an experience away.

But that narrative is shifting. “For me, I would enjoy caviar as a finishing touch to my favorite foods, whether that is steak, fish, or even Paleo pasta.” said Sarah Garcia of Lakewood Ranch, FL. “To me it can be a luxury element, much like the cherry on top, that enhances something rather than standing alone. However, it doesn’t always have to be something people can only get in a premium service. It can make experiences more playful! I wouldn’t consider caviar a trend. It has been a staple in cultures for decades. It is classic, and because of that I don’t see it as something that goes in or out of style. It is just the culture and visibility of caviar that changes as people do,” said Garcia.

Caviar seems to thrive most when it’s treated as something to explore, not something to perform.

“In the sense that caviar is gaining a lot of momentum on social media, I would say sure it is trending. However, it is not going anywhere. I had a caviar martini just the other day,” she continued. One of my favorite ways to eat caviar is with classic Lays chips and some type of cream,” shared Decker.

From potato chips to pancakes (and yes, even chicken nuggets), people are reimagining how and where caviar belongs. Here is the thing though - two things can both be true. Caviar will most likely continue to become a more widely-available comfort food, but it will also stay seen as a luxury for many people who grew up with a true caviar service. It is very likely that it will continue to top Michelin Star dishes, but my bet is on it also becoming more and more popular as a casual and fun snack for people who may have once thought that it wasn't something for them.

So… Who Actually Likes Caviar?

Here’s the truth: we didn’t see a clear split between men and women.

Instead, we noticed two distinct groups:

  • Rules-based eaters: focused on what’s “correct”

  • Curiosity-based eaters: focused on what’s enjoyable

“After hosting dozens of caviar tastings, I can confidently say this isn’t a gendered food. The real difference we see is between people who are worried about doing it ‘correctly’ and people who are willing to experiment. The moment someone stops asking if they’re eating it the right way and starts asking if they like it, everything changes,” explained Taylor Kelly, Founder of Eventful ATL.

Why Caviar Keeps Coming Back

Caviar trends may rise and fall, but curiosity doesn’t.

When food becomes playful instead of precious, it finds new life. And that may be why caviar keeps resurfacing, not as a status symbol, but as a shared experience.

At Eventful ATL, we believe the best moments aren’t about expertise. They’re about showing up curious, trying something new, and leaving with a story to tell. Are you caviar curious or even a caviar veteran who wants to try caviar in a new way? Check out our caviar-tasting workshop hosted in Atlanta every month.
